work horse

i may no longer qualify for “back to school” shopping, but that doesn’t mean i can’t use the season’s sales to stock up on some of my week day staples. not sure why i gravitate towards pants versus skirts or dresses for the office most mornings, but over the last few years i’ve accumulated quite a collection (perhaps because i’m perennially cold, and they don’t require recently shaving your legs).

as the workhorses in my wardrobe, i never feel bad splurging on a well made style, given they see a lot more action than most items in my closet. but several bargain pairs have also worked their way into rotation, including a legendary $19 pair of WHBM clearance culottes i bought during a work trip in Columbus, OH and wore so often they literally disintegrated at the seams. which of course they no longer make. RIP.

below are the six pairs of work pants I wear around the clock (and pretty much all year long). the rag & bone simone’s have a sleek high waisted fit and concealed back zipper, perfect for longer tops or sweaters, but the barney’s trousers deserve the high school superlative “best all around,” and if you buy them at the store custom tailoring is included. a zara knit pair, far left, might be the newest addition to the group but they are coming in hot– as basically chic sweatpants with an adjustable wrap waist, i can’t say enough good things about them. grab a pair (or two) before they sell out!

also, knowing that most working gals have their “go to” pair of black pants (many of which are the herewith Minnie I’m told), i would love to hear your favorites in the comments below! we can have a big happy-family-sister-of-the-traveling-pants-kumbaya moment. gap? milly? theory? club monaco? pick your poison and share with the group please!

as for my other office items in heaviest rotation? theory short sleeved turtlenecks (if i buy long sleeves i push them up anyways), an green tibi knit t-shirt that i can’t seem to find online (similar to this one), this black buttoned blazer i leave on the back of my chair, a pair of block heeled pumps i’ve worn into the ground (subway grates and construction zones are landmines in stilettos), and a plain gold watch. all guaranteed to expedite getting out the door monday morning and help you survive ’til friday! Xx

summer in the city

while most people (at least life according to Instagram) are currently headed to various summer vacations, beach getaways and tropical destinations, this working girl is sticking to the mean streets of nyc, at least Monday-Friday.

leave it to one of my favorite fashion blogs, le catch, to have me clamoring for the perfect new summer office staple — a linen blazer. as with anything featured on le catch, most items go quickly, so I was happy to snap up the j.crew style below before it sold out (hopefully it will be restocked soon).

a lightweight linen style can be thrown over a shift dress for days you don’t feel like getting dressed (ie after too many margs at happy hour the night prior), or it can do double duty over a t-shirt on chilly weekend evenings. but since the temperature in my building is set on arctic, I can’t wait to wear mine with some crisp white loafers, a knit shell, and basic work pants. of course, oversized black shades are also necessary for warding off the summer glare on Park Avenue– perfect for stating “I might be relegated to a concrete jungle, but I’m on vacation in my mind!”

the shape of water

YALL. has everyone seen the shape of water? i watched it on a plane home from SF last night and cannot get over it– the depth of character development, the unusual story line, the gorgeous cinematography, the attention to each and every tiny detail weaving in and out throughout the film…. talk about a work of art.

while obviously this film was very hyped at the oscars, i had put off seeing it because a) pan’s labyrinth scared the ever living s&*t out of me, which was the last big film by this director, and b) i have an extremely hard time sitting still for an entire movie, so i figured i needed to watch it at a time when i was feeling ready to focus, in order give it a fair chance. maybe it was being trapped on an airplane, but i was completely captivated. and don’t get me started on the ending– i won’t give away any spoilers, but text or email me to please discuss, because i am OVERWHELMED (can you ever just be “whelmed”?) and need someone to talk to about it. so there’s that.

the second mind blowing discovery of the day? lychee ice cream. THANK YOU JET BLUE. i have found a new non-sartorial obsession in this stuff. it’s light, creamy, not too sweet and completely worth the lactose-induced belly ache. do any readers know where i can procure such a delicacy at sea level?

in homage to my new favorite feature film, and in the effort of keeping this a fashion blog, a few items worthy of a modern day mermaid…

going gaga

while it may still be thirty degrees out, i have spring fashion and bare legs as my current top priorities (PLSZZZ GOD at least this weekend!!!)

thankfully, zara just dropped some amazingggg bargain buys right now, including this button down dress which is comparable to this way more expensive tibi. i went a little gaga and did a huge order this week, with lots of fresh white tops for the weekend and easy dresses for work. i can’t wait to see what works! hilariously, almost every item (sans this bright headband, which i plan to wear pool side) that found its way into my cart was white or navy, so I guess that’s my official color palette this spring. did i mention that you, too, can go gaga since every item i bought was less than $70!

what i bought…
