work it girl

ah, dreaded monday is here again.

a friend of mine is starting a new job at a tech startup this week and reached out for some advice on how to nail a very casual office dress code. While most people would be psyched to have the freedom to wear pretty much whatever you want to work, as a female who’s grown up in pretty formal business settings, I can relate to how untethering this transition might be. sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming.

first, let’s source some inspiration…

as you can see highlighted in many of the shots above, there are a few staples any working girl should own. these include a white cashmere crewneck, well tailored cropped black pants, a pointy flat (these or these) and a navy blazer. however, outside those parameters, i have come up with a pretty standard recipe of key items for getting dressed in a hurry monday – friday.

my six piece recipe:

CPs- are there things I missed? what are some of your go-to work staples? let me know!

back to black

the other day, while walking home from a haircut, i got caught in a torrential downpour on 7th avenue sans umbrella. as fate would have it, i **very coincidentally** was passing barney’s and went in to kill time in the makeup department until the rain stopped… whoops.

an hour and a half later, i was best friends with a sweet lady named Cherry (sidenote- we text now), and had tried on everything from basic work pants (these and these but ultimately this pair won, if anyone is in the market), to dresses for upcoming spring weddings (this was gorgggg but needs someone taller), to eventually landing on this funky isabel marant sweater. it’s baggy sleeves, fuzzy open-weave and oversized grommets make it just like the store it was in, completely downtown cool.

while i’m going to hold off until it hopefully an end of winter sale to try to snag it, it got me back to my favorite part of the color wheel- black. while black can get a bad rap for being boring, it’s the staple of any good wardrobe for a reason. my other current noir picks? this tiered blouse, a pair of printed joggers, moto style leggings, and work-friendly loafers. and for those of you looking for other slouchy weekend sweaters, try a cropped turtleneck, a fringed style, some stripes and a frayed millennial pink.

at least the rain had stopped by the time i was done! Xx

oui oui ouiiii

move over chanel granny pumps, there’s a new it girl in town…

meet the dior slingback, 2017’s latest street style darling. true life, i had to physically pull myself away from these at Selfridge’s a few weeks ago. it’s no wonder this shoe is taking over– a twist on the ever classic pointy toe black flat– made insta ready with graphic j’adore printed elastic. it was a tragic separation, i loved these shoes and i’m pretty sure they loved me back (and wanted to come live their best life in new york). they look good with everything from skinny jeans for a gals lunch date, to a pleated skirt and button down for the office, and i can even see some uber chic girl style them with a frilly tulle maxi dress, the perfect ballerina chic kind of look. in my dream scenario (where there’s a pair in my closet), I’d go for a date night look, paired with….

1- dior j’adore flats

2- cashmere trench coat

3- structural bucket bag

4- lip pigment

5- dark skinny jeans

6- lace top (on sale!)

7- pearl choker

8- chance perfume

party hearty

this weekend i’m headed south for my baby sister’s college graduation. SEK– where did the time go??! it seems like just yesterday I was the one walking the lawn, drinking mimosas at 6am and tearfully saying goodbye to four years at the best school on earth. since graduation weekend at Virginia is truly a marathon of social occasions– bopping from one party, brunch, or dinner to the next, plus a few school sponsored events between, a corresponding marathon ready weekend wardrobe is required. in preparation, i rounded up a smorgasbord of spring dresses, for graduations, bridal showers, christenings and all the other warm weather events coming your way.

graphic: 1- scotch & soda 2- tory burch 3- self portrait 4- just cavalli

girlie: 1- iro paris 2- rebecca taylor 3- goodnight macaroon

floral: 1- alice & olivia 2- goodnight macaroon  3- ted baker 4- house of holland

stripes: 1- dRA  2- topshop 3- for love and lemons

wish me luck at surviving the undergraduates!! not sure this old lady is quite up to reliving her glory days…
