summer in the city

while most people (at least life according to Instagram) are currently headed to various summer vacations, beach getaways and tropical destinations, this working girl is sticking to the mean streets of nyc, at least Monday-Friday.

leave it to one of my favorite fashion blogs, le catch, to have me clamoring for the perfect new summer office staple — a linen blazer. as with anything featured on le catch, most items go quickly, so I was happy to snap up the j.crew style below before it sold out (hopefully it will be restocked soon).

a lightweight linen style can be thrown over a shift dress for days you don’t feel like getting dressed (ie after too many margs at happy hour the night prior), or it can do double duty over a t-shirt on chilly weekend evenings. but since the temperature in my building is set on arctic, I can’t wait to wear mine with some crisp white loafers, a knit shell, and basic work pants. of course, oversized black shades are also necessary for warding off the summer glare on Park Avenue– perfect for stating “I might be relegated to a concrete jungle, but I’m on vacation in my mind!”

wrap it up

i got a reader request (yay!) for a post on the items i wore in miami a few weeks back. for those interested, it features this striped wrap skirt from revolve, along with a one piece from solid & striped, ace of something straw hat, pair of knock off k jacques sandals which have since sold out from h&m, and old joie beach tote. The skirt is one of my favorite spring purchases but unfortunately has not been able to leave my closet since this trip…

over the past few years i’ve found myself wearing fewer and fewer skirts with the influx of good denim out there, but i’m destined to change that this summer. i love the idea of pairing a ruffled mini with a tshirt and jean jacket for saturday brunch, with sneaks and a sweatshirt for a girlie meets tomboy look, or obviously over a swimsuit as an easy coverup alternative.

want one for yourself? other top ruffled mini picks include ones by j.crew, tularosazara, alice + olivia, LPAfor love and lemons, isabel marant and h&m.

your best body

this sounds random, but i have been on a bodysuit buying rampage lately, which may or may not be partially inspired by lauren bushnell (which i cringe to admit). while they can get a bad rap for being very 80’s jazzercise, the seamless smooth look achieved when tucked into high waisted pants or shorts can’t be beat. the photos below show just how versatile a bodysuit can be — from tucked into a dressy skirt, worn under a baggy sweater, paired with a leather jacket for date night, or put beneath a blazer for the office.

the tip to keep from looking too kardashian (unless that’s the vibe you’re going for) is of course something looser over top. my favorite picks so far? a simple asos tank (which i’ve now ordered in 3 colors), a scoop back american apparel, this plunging alice and olivia, a deep double V with long sleeves (which did need a little altering from my tailor), a bright ruffled free people, and a soft j.crew knit (on sale). try one and see, i guarantee it’ll work its way into your weekly rotation and you’ll be stocking up on a few more.

work it girl

ah, dreaded monday is here again.

a friend of mine is starting a new job at a tech startup this week and reached out for some advice on how to nail a very casual office dress code. While most people would be psyched to have the freedom to wear pretty much whatever you want to work, as a female who’s grown up in pretty formal business settings, I can relate to how untethering this transition might be. sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming.

first, let’s source some inspiration…

as you can see highlighted in many of the shots above, there are a few staples any working girl should own. these include a white cashmere crewneck, well tailored cropped black pants, a pointy flat (these or these) and a navy blazer. however, outside those parameters, i have come up with a pretty standard recipe of key items for getting dressed in a hurry monday – friday.

my six piece recipe:
