breath of fresh air

Whew! and I’m baaaack. I’m sure a few of you noticed my absence this summer and the truth is, with my summer purchases behind me in June and a whirlwind schedule of weekend travel and work, I honestly didn’t feel very inspired or on top of things lately. I’ve also been busy with the annoyances of apartment hunting, finding movers, buying furniture, and figuring out all those pesky #adulting details. Now that the worst is behind, and I’m sitting here nestled in my new Nolita digs, this gal is ready to get back in the game.

While I was sad to give up the west village, the westside highway, and all of my favorite neighborhood spots discovered over the past four years (true confession I almost cried saying goodbye to my coffee place, my dry cleaners, and all those little haunts that make this city a home), I can already tell my new ‘hood is a much needed change of pace. The sartorial flavor is a little different, edgier, and just what I needed. Which leads me back to the point of this story- it just takes one great outfit and bam! inspired to blog all over again.

such was the case last week, when on a very hot muggy pre Labor Day afternoon, I was walking home in a haze, lulled by the slow pace of the city, and passed a pretty blonde girl with long beachy locks. she was rocking a crisp white button down with rolled sleeves, half tucked, and a pair of electric blue feather earrings by mignonne gavigan (these to be exact). It was so crisp, so easy simple, and yet such a pop– a total anecdote to my mood and the weather! i’m sure most of us have the makings for this outfit already in the closet, but she inspired me to refresh my button down game with something slightly oversized, and use some tucking, rolling, and bold accessories to make it fresh for fall. some inspo below…

Truth: I have been trying to avoid buying clothes with prints, but failing. The reality is that my closet is chock full of color and prints (more so than neutrals) because they are just more exciting to buy, but as I’ve gotten older, again and again I pull out the same black dress. I’m not sure if it’s my age in life (to go Freud on you, I think I still associate prints, especially bright florals, with my embarrassingly awkward Lilly-filled tween days) or my impatience to wear new things and not repeat the same thing twice—and prints are easily identifiable. However, this silk Heidi Merrick cropped top has made me consider breaking my rule. The combination of the simple colors (black and white make it basically a neutral right?) makes it go with a lot—so follow along as I convince myself to wear it on a bunch of different occasions (from most dressy to least).

#1 the spring fete– take it to the next level of dressy with a taffeta skirt and stilettos

1. Heidi Merrick silk top

2. dance the night away (without your stomach hanging out) in a high-waisted skirt like this tibi

3. killer fringe clutch (i mean, a girl can dream right?)

4. equally amazeballs SW heels (see Jamie Chung slay in them here and you’ll inevitably find them in your shopping cart)

5. simple pearl studs in case the whole thing needs classing up a bit

#2 drinks with friends–because nothing pairs better with pinot than a crop top

image002

2. boxy raffia clutch to add another playful print

3. chunky neutral sandals to balance out the black

4. swap out the overplayed white jeans for a cream pair of Etro chinos–still equally comfortable, but fresh

#3 back yard bbq— silk + cutoffs? wear if you dare

image003

2. mix materials by pairing with black denim cutoffs (also obsessed with a silky pair from Old Navy, surprise surprise!)

3. simple Frye leather sandals keep it casual

4. my favorite red polish in the summer, Lollipop by Essie

5. im sure you’re sick of my obsession with tassels, but can’t stop won’t stop—this one by holst + lee is too good not to share (currently 20% off with code spring!)

day late and a peso short

Lo siento chicas! I am definitely a day late and a peso short on the whole cinco de mayo thing. This gal has been the opposite of anything chic lately—lots of late nights, slimey take-out and getting through the grind at work. Luckily, however, the world of instagram was out in full force last night to show me all the amazing queso and corona I was missing. Don’t feel too bad for me though–I did manage to find this sweet little topshop number to lift my spirits.

tunic dress

If I had been lucky enough to spend my yesterday somewhere fun, lounging leisurely—I’d be wearing something loose, flowy and bright (the more embroidered the better!)—and pair it with some tassel sandals to really seal the fiesta-worthy deal (also die for these by the same designer)

cinco de mayo
1. striped mexi dress

2. loeffler randall tassel sandals (budget friendly version)

3. cabachon cuff

4. clear acetate frames

5. neutral woven tote (die for these straw bags here)

Also, a pair of clear sunglasses has been on my wishlist for this summer— ever since I saw them on my original girl crush OP. Round lenses are everywhere this season but I may have to try a cheap pair before I break the bank for this cutler and gross style.

A few more festive looks to cure the “mexi (i dont live in) cali” blues

1) adjustable ruffled maxi dress (worn on one of my bffs CHG here)
