bright white

I have been on a white blouse/top/tee buying spree in anticipation of summer weather finally heading our way. A breezy white top is not only the most versatile packing item you can throw in your bag, but also perfectly accentuates your (real or faux) vacation glow.

The new favorites I’ve nabbed so far? This eyelet zara, a square neck alc tank, an iro dupe by mango, pixie market puff sleeved perfection and a ruffled tank by Joie. Others I’m eyeing? another zara, a twist on a everyday basic, and a plunging cinq a sept. sometimes it’s best to be a blank slate! xx

knit is it

for those diligent fb stalkers out there, you may have noticed (but hopefully not!) that one of my best friends and I frequently mail each other boxes of clothes and often get snapped in the same stuff. we both are over-shoppers and under-wearers. hehe, yes, we wear undergarments 😉 — i mean we share to double our closet, get more use out of certain things and save some dough in the process. in nyc, i know of a few girls who do this through hosting “clothes swaps” at different peoples apartments, which is a game in town i would also like to get in on. thoughts?

in my mailbox i usually find her recently worn pieces, mostly printed tops and party dresses, but occasionally there are basics. i gave myself the rule that everything she sends me must be worn at least once, so i’ve had to get creative. having someone picking out your clothes for you has definitely made me step out of my comfort zone!

one such piece, a grey knit short sleeved dress (worn by gigi hadid below) was sent, accompanied by the text “its too tight for me, but i know it will look great on you!” errr…thanks gf?! we are exactly the same size. body-con styles are definitely not my thing, i literally detest and fear the lower abdomen pooch that inevitably comes with them. but i made myself follow the rule, and figured some layers with it (tights, leather jacket, scarf) would help me leave the house in it.

fast forward four months, the joke is on me, because i’m wearing this dress on regular repeat. i can’t get over how versatile of a piece it is (truly as basic as a t-shirt) and i know it will be a building block for my spring wardrobe as well. since i am now a clingy dress convert, here are a few tips for styling them:

  1. going it alone is tough- unless you have a rocking supermodel bod or a boatload of self-confidence (or hopefully both! like our girl gigi), these dresses are going to be tough to wear alone. they tend to emphasize every bump and bulge, and the fabrics are usually sheer. if you can find a thicker material, score! but if not, don’t be scared like i was, and read on to tip #2…
  2. jackets are your friend- the key to making myself comfortable in this style was putting something over it. Initially I tried a soft iro blazer for work followed by a leather jacket for night. For warmer weather, I’m thinking a duster cardigan, jean jacket or even trench vest will all do the trick.
  3. so are heels- as with anything tight, heels lengthen and lean you out. as i’ve gotten more comfortable in the dress, i’ve also done a pointed toe flat which has a similar effect.
  4. look for a longer hemline- in this kind of style that is already tight in the booty, the last thing you want to be doing is tugging it down all day. i love how the dress CHG sent is a longer length, and you can always scrunch up this type of fabric somewhat to shorten it. long sleeves can help you feel more covered too.

intrigued? sold? a bunch of options: this white style with a slit, this A&F (which looks shockingly similar to this much more expensive opening ceremony dress), a sleeveless turtleneck, a $59 steal, stripes from our friends at club monaco, a classic version by the gap and a daring raspberry bcbg.

happy friYAY chickadees. in honor of the gloriousness of this day, welcome to a round up of my latest fall wardrobe whims and desires, otherwise known as the hit list. a sartorial smorgasbord if you will, of everything under the sun I have my eye on. since attention spans are short these days, I capped it at 7 today, but trust me, the full list is much longer!

#1 cut out booties. the other night post yoga, i spied a chic little pea eating outside at Rosemary’s wearing some badass booties and had to restrain myself from asking where they were from. they were slightly western, but new york edgy, with a walkable 2″ heel — the perfect pair for current 70-degree pre-fall weather. you know, when you want the fall-ish vibe but without the hot feet? so far ive found these babies, this studded pair, a sleek version by my lover philip lim (could buy everything in his Fall ’16 collection),  a basket weave jeffrey campbell, and taupe ones by cool girl brand kaanas.

#2 a dark shearling jacket. yes, this request total counteracts the practicality of desired purchase numero uno, but i gotta find one. kind of a kate bosworth vibe, no? lurrrve this vince x563, this marked down see by chloe, dip a toe in the water with a fluffy version from nasty gal, or sell a kidney for an alc.

#3 tibi sweatersssss. like amy smilovic, your sweater game is currently STRONG. i want them all and i want them now. obsessed with this cozy military style pocket sweater, also this one, which has sleeves that can be buttoned up or left open, and who doesn’t like a pom pom? so fun. boom shocka locka.

#4 velvet slingbacks from banana. rumor has it that bananas shoes are made by vince camuto, which explains their dominance season after season while the clothes are usually questionable at best (but seem to be improving this year). i saw this chiiic pair and loved their lux simplicity (they look like manolos!). perfect to dress up jeans, wear to work with skirts or debut during thanksgiving festivities–something about turkey and velvet just feels so right…

velvet

#5 gold ear huggies, crawlers, studs and knots. the more i live in new york, the more i want to pierce my ears all over. call it some weird form of delayed teenage rebellion (trust me, i did NOT have any sort of a rebellious streak at 16…more like nerd alert) but i think the driving force behind said mutilation is all the dainty, clingy, crawly designs out there. they look best in threes, fours and fives– the more the merrier! i want these baguettes, flower huggies (similar here), an ear cuff, and this gigi hadid approved pair (find a simpler style for half the price here).

#6 this dress will be mine come holiday parties, mark my words. debating this romper too (oops!)

#7 winter shorts. these belted dvf darlings became mine last week (25% off with code FRIENDS25), after i lusted after suede shorts at intermix all of last fall. try a pair bare legged now and with tights for later. so cute with a basic t or turtleneck. not sold? sailor shorts by derek lam or a skort version by carven.
