back in business

anddddd we’re back! after a lengthy (3 month!) interruption, expect posting to resume on a somewhat normal schedule, if there are any CP’s left still reading. the end of 2018 turned out to be a pretty crazy, hectic time for me, with work and a major personal project sucking up most of my air (more on this soon, hopefully!), which was followed up by several trips over the holidays. And now that i’ve been back in NY, I just haven’t had much to write about. maybe this is the winter blues talking, and I acknowledge this forum is not the time or place for me to get political, but i felt kind of silly writing my normal articles about $400 shoes and $80 face masks when federal workers weren’t even able to collect their paychecks and LaGuardia airport had to shut down from lack of staff.

hopefully things are somewhat settling and on my front, an upcoming trip has inspired some new purchases, so the CP is also re-opening for business. i’ve missed le blog and would love comments and/or ideas for topics to write about in 2019! thank u, next!

today i’m featuring eight of my latest obsessions/new purchases/life hacks. also not featured, but equally on repeat, is this amazon coat that broke the internet, which a girlfriend strong armed me into purchasing. i am a sucker for olive but i love the navy too. it’s not the warmest coat I own but is a perfect weekender for wearing over athleisure to run errands. In fact I just saw another Nolita-n walking her dog in it on my way to work.

1) making– gluten free banana muffins. while i am trying not to go toooo crazy piling on new wellness routines after the holidays, weeks of carbo-loading at home and in paris have motivated me to cook a little more and make some healthy ingredient swaps. one of these initiatives is to save a little dough (and calories!) by making breakfast for the week in advance. CGB passed along this amazing 5 ingredient banana muffin recipe, which I added a scoop of protein powder to for extra heartiness. so far I am loving– they freeze perfectly and reheat in the microwave in just 45 seconds, great for when you’re running out the door.

2) stomping– one of my best winter purchases so far has been these snakeskin steve madden booties, given how much all black I wear. they’re the perfect pop to feel like you’re dressed up even when you’re sick of black turtlenecks and frozen temps… #butmakeitfashion

lol remember in my last post when i was excited about the threat of snow?! sick.

3) stretching– my younger cousin got me on board with these gap star print leggings over thanksgiving, which look just like a much more expensive pair at bandier. i’ve never bought gap fit before but so far i’ve been impressed with the quality and price, so after ordering the black i went back for the navy.

4) polishing– the dry air (and holiday booze consumption) once again has wrecked my skin, so i treated myself to a facial at the famous christine chin spa last weekend after seeing it on the Stripe. not only did I have an amazing experience– i will be going back for more regular cleanings every six weeks– she convinced me to try her moisturizing toner, blemish gel and skin eraser, all of which are having real results. i highly recommend paying her a visit down on orchard street, but for you non-nyc-ers, they can be purchased online.

5) tucking– i finally managed to find a great pair of straight 90’s style jeans that don’t give me “mom butt” at planet blue. i am a big fan of agolde’s jean shorts but i had never had luck with their full length jeans until this pair. they look amazing with sneaks and a sweater half-tucked in the front. four stars fo’ sho’. more sizes here.

6) rolling– ahead of my loaded travel schedule, i splurged on new away luggage after hearing all the hype. while i hate the heaviness of the bags compared to soft case styles (this brics has always been my weekend go to), and the fact they make me feel very #basic, matching luggage with every other millennial in the airport, the ease of the four wheels has been such a nice little luxury.

7) cuddling– i came across this knit sweater bodysuit during a sale at a random store in soho after christmas and, after trying it on, immediately purchased it in 3 colors (don’t let the weird styling on the website fool you). the knit fabric is super thin and soft, almost t-shirt material, but a little warmer than you’d expect. the deep v-neck needed a little stitching up from my tailor to be non-X rated, but post “surgery” its become a staple in my wardrobe– i’ve been wearing it layered under leather jackets, my plaid blazer and even a second chunky cardigan.

8) burning– last week’s single digit temps made me highly unmotivated to leave my apartment, but i managed to run to the diptyque store for a new candle. this winter I have really been missing having a fireplace in my apartment and this yummy winter scent + a fake netflix fire are the next best thing.

happy tuesday– send me your thoughts, comments, latest loves, and updates on what you’ve been up to in my absence! Xx

winter wonders

after a week in Cali, i am (hopefully) headed back east– and apparently straight into NY’s first snow.

since jet blue isn’t currently cooperating, i stole time to round up a few winter ready picks necessary to get back in the city swing of things. compared to sunshine and 60, i’ve realized that NY life has not only pushed me towards all black everythinggg, but also more toward a blend of function & glam. it makes me crave a little ~edge~ that warmer weather fashions just don’t allow.

currently, i am loving the idea of a fancy print coat or embellished party sweater with some joggers and sneaks– comfy and cozy, slush friendly, and also holiday ready without trying too hard. and as a PSA for anyone in need of a more casual jacket, ive been wearing this tory sport-like bargain over yoga clothes and chunky knits for the last two weeks straight! fingers crossed i finally get out of this airport. Xx

1– metallic sneaks 2– cashmere joggers 3– leather weekend bag

4– miracle cure (i have been slathering this everywhere!, including painfully dry post-shave legs)

5– leather dress 6–pom pom beanie

7–shearling platforms (perfect for a winter commute) 8–leopard jacket

9– beaded sweater 10– crystal drops 11–matte lipstick 12– cocoon coat

my close friend has started questioning my sanity, since this trend is v. outside my typical comfort zone, but my new favorite fall must-have item? the combat boot. i’ve purchased this affordable mango pair to see how much wear i get before investing bigger time, but i am currently drooling over these rag & bone, as well as other options by stuart weitzman, sam edelman, givenchysigerson morrisonzara and barney’s.

i’ve had to restrategize my jean wardrobe since this style requires a return to longer skinny jegging styles (cropped flares have been having such a moment), but i love the look with a chunky sweater (similar vibe for less) and soft leather jacket like the last CP above. when it gets colder, i might even throw this plaid topper on for another layer. will i end up looking kaia gerber cool or more liv tyler in empire records? guess you gals will have to be the judge…

what’s in her bag

for those who don’t already know, i am a total beauty junkie and am constantly trying new products. one of my favorite things to do on trips or when visiting my friends is to raid their cosmetics bags and medicine cabinets. i know, i sound like such a great house guest!

luckily, they are usually more than happy to share, showing off their favorites and having me play guinea pig — hence the inspiration for this new type of post. meet “what’s in her bag,” borrowed from what used to be the title of my favorite page in US weekly. in lieu of a celebrity’s purse contents, i’m going to highlight new beauty & makeup picks according to some of my besties. today i’m kicking it off fresh from a trip to beantown, where KSR shared with me her love of all things Goop, plus a few other primo choices from Oribe, GlamGlow, and Marc Jacobs beauty…

ahhhh the money shot…. honey i’m home!

my unfiltered reviews & product superlatives…

Goop– best all around. for the entire length of my stay (thanks very generous friend!) I used the full Goop skincare line– including the instant facial, day and night moisturizers, eye cream and face oil. i had heard so much hype about all of Gwennie’s products, but i can honestly say they lived up to it and then some. my skin’s texture was visibly improved in just three days– more even, supple, brighter, and moisturized. i know these products are pricey, but to me there was a noticeable difference in quality versus even other high end brands like la mer and jo malone. it also doesn’t hurt that the packaging is gorgissimo– all of the jars are nice and weighty ceramic– and the products are minimally scented with a light citrus scent.

if i can pick a top item from the set that i won’t be able to live without, it would either be the instant facial or the night cream. the instant facial is potent, so use sparingly to start. it’s a two minute mask you put on 2-3x a week, and contains exfoliating enzymes and natural acids; it sloughed away some of the blemishes and most of the dead skin on my face, leaving me feeling a little raw at first, but after following it with the face oil and intensive night cream, the next day i woke up feeling soft as a baby, and the remaining spots on my face cleared up within a day or two. the night cream is also a winner. with sensitive skin like mine, i will do just about anything for deep moisture. this one is heavy without feeling greasy and soaks in quickly.

there wasn’t a “loser” of the group, but if i have any complaints it’s that the day moisturizer, which looks like a pump, has to be pulled out on a stick. i think is mostly just annoying design because it’s hard to get the right amount of product out. for those interested in dipping a toe into the Goop world, the discovery set is a great way to get travel sized minis of everything (except the eye cream) before you commit. all in, i am a complete goop beauty convert, and can’t wait to try the melting cleanser, lip balm and GP’s favorite natural deodorant next.

Marc Jacobs bronzer & brush— cutest couple. i don’t know why I’ve never considered buying marc jacobs makeup (maybe because it launched in the past couple of years, so i assumed it was sort of a fad?) thank god my friend was more of a risk taker, because i could not be more obsessed. this bronzer is so natural looking, it gives the perfect flush. the palette is slightly giant in size, so not the most purse/travel friendly, but you know it will give bang for your buck. plus the brush is possibly the softest, fluffiest creation ever. put together, the two feel incredibly luxe and celebrity worthy.

Glamglow jelly cleanser— most reliable. don’t be freaked out that this gentle facewash comes out black as night, like something in an episode of stranger things. it’s just another odd yet effective miracle worker by glamglow (the brand that also makes my favorite under eye masks). i don’t know how this company comes up with its products or convinces people to use them– the eye mask i love is bright yellow with floating seaweed chunks in it and i still voluntarily put it all over my face– but whatever ingredients they use really, really work. this one turns into a milky white lather and took off every stitch of makeup without leaving my skin feeling stripped.

Nars concealer— most likely to succeed. as i mentioned above, the weekend i rolled into town my skin was acting up with some serious breakouts. i had an important work interview and a date, so i needed full coverage concealer and fast. this creamy formula, which i put on per recommendation with the bobbi brown brush, saved the day on the zits while also erasing all evidence of under eye bags and tiredness; win/win in my book.

Supergoop body butter most popular. shame on me since one of my dear friends in NY runs marketing for them (sorry IDC!) but i was under the impression that super goop was sunscreen only. that is in fact #fakenews, and their body butter is pretty incredible. it’s the perfect fresh-out-of-the-shower lotion, and not too precious for every day use. i will definitely be stocking up on a bottle this winter when dry skin sets in.

Oribe purple shampoo— biggest flirt. given that i’m not a blonde (natural or otherwise), the purple shampoo trend hasn’t really been on my radar, but a recent keratin left my highlights looking a little brassy so i decided to give this a whirl. I found it toned this down slightly after just one use, and would probably have been more effective after a couple of continuous uses. even if the purple tint does absolutely nothing for you, this shampoo left my hair smelling amazing for days.

Nars finishing powder and rose spray— hardest working. i’ve always been a big believer in setting your makeup with translucent powder to make it last for the whole day, but lately my cheap drug store option has failed me and been showing up white. this is clearly problematic since i am ghostly enough as is. i’m glad i got to take this nars alternative out for a lengthy test drive because it worked like a champ. just a light dusting over your face, followed by a refreshing spritz of the rose spray, and my makeup was still in tact when i got home (post margs) 16 hours later.

beauty bloggers or booze enthusiasts? both.

thank you to my dear friend for letting me go ham with an amazing assortment of beauty products, and to my other friends, just wait, your vanity is next! want more before then? check out some of my other beauty product reviews here and here.
