g.i. jane(t)

my close friend has started questioning my sanity, since this trend is v. outside my typical comfort zone, but my new favorite fall must-have item? the combat boot. i’ve purchased this affordable mango pair to see how much wear i get before investing bigger time, but i am currently drooling over these rag & bone, as well as other options by stuart weitzman, sam edelman, givenchysigerson morrisonzara and barney’s.

i’ve had to restrategize my jean wardrobe since this style requires a return to longer skinny jegging styles (cropped flares have been having such a moment), but i love the look with a chunky sweater (similar vibe for less) and soft leather jacket like the last CP above. when it gets colder, i might even throw this plaid topper on for another layer. will i end up looking kaia gerber cool or more liv tyler in empire records? guess you gals will have to be the judge…

ulla love

victoria salsbury, a former designer at Chan Luu and now the chief creative of her own new jewelry line V. Chapman, gave me major outfit ~feels~ in an Ulla Johnson dress on insta this weekend. her look inspired me to find a similar dress for an upcoming early fall wedding. ulla’s breezy, romantic styles are the perfect compliment to crisper air and the changing season.

breath of fresh air

Whew! and I’m baaaack. I’m sure a few of you noticed my absence this summer and the truth is, with my summer purchases behind me in June and a whirlwind schedule of weekend travel and work, I honestly didn’t feel very inspired or on top of things lately. I’ve also been busy with the annoyances of apartment hunting, finding movers, buying furniture, and figuring out all those pesky #adulting details. Now that the worst is behind, and I’m sitting here nestled in my new Nolita digs, this gal is ready to get back in the game.

While I was sad to give up the west village, the westside highway, and all of my favorite neighborhood spots discovered over the past four years (true confession I almost cried saying goodbye to my coffee place, my dry cleaners, and all those little haunts that make this city a home), I can already tell my new ‘hood is a much needed change of pace. The sartorial flavor is a little different, edgier, and just what I needed. Which leads me back to the point of this story- it just takes one great outfit and bam! inspired to blog all over again.

such was the case last week, when on a very hot muggy pre Labor Day afternoon, I was walking home in a haze, lulled by the slow pace of the city, and passed a pretty blonde girl with long beachy locks. she was rocking a crisp white button down with rolled sleeves, half tucked, and a pair of electric blue feather earrings by mignonne gavigan (these to be exact). It was so crisp, so easy simple, and yet such a pop– a total anecdote to my mood and the weather! i’m sure most of us have the makings for this outfit already in the closet, but she inspired me to refresh my button down game with something slightly oversized, and use some tucking, rolling, and bold accessories to make it fresh for fall. some inspo below…

your best body

this sounds random, but i have been on a bodysuit buying rampage lately, which may or may not be partially inspired by lauren bushnell (which i cringe to admit). while they can get a bad rap for being very 80’s jazzercise, the seamless smooth look achieved when tucked into high waisted pants or shorts can’t be beat. the photos below show just how versatile a bodysuit can be — from tucked into a dressy skirt, worn under a baggy sweater, paired with a leather jacket for date night, or put beneath a blazer for the office.

the tip to keep from looking too kardashian (unless that’s the vibe you’re going for) is of course something looser over top. my favorite picks so far? a simple asos tank (which i’ve now ordered in 3 colors), a scoop back american apparel, this plunging alice and olivia, a deep double V with long sleeves (which did need a little altering from my tailor), a bright ruffled free people, and a soft j.crew knit (on sale). try one and see, i guarantee it’ll work its way into your weekly rotation and you’ll be stocking up on a few more.
