work it girl

ah, dreaded monday is here again.

a friend of mine is starting a new job at a tech startup this week and reached out for some advice on how to nail a very casual office dress code. While most people would be psyched to have the freedom to wear pretty much whatever you want to work, as a female who’s grown up in pretty formal business settings, I can relate to how untethering this transition might be. sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming.

first, let’s source some inspiration…

as you can see highlighted in many of the shots above, there are a few staples any working girl should own. these include a white cashmere crewneck, well tailored cropped black pants, a pointy flat (these or these) and a navy blazer. however, outside those parameters, i have come up with a pretty standard recipe of key items for getting dressed in a hurry monday – friday.

my six piece recipe:

office refresh

with the last summer vacation behind me, i’ve gone full force into work mode. unfortunately, my office wardrobe needs a little catching up– i caught my reflection in the glass today and realize the shirt i was wearing had not only a coffee stain from the last time I wore it, but also had strings fraying at the hem (whoops). thankfully i perused the web and found a plethora of freshness to spiffy up my 9-5 self; all at a variety of prices. i might not even mind the return to cubicle life if it means i get to wear these!

from left to right…

blazers: felt jacketiro multicolored

loafers: fringed metalliccamo slipperssuede flats, penny loafers

shirts: poplin striped tunictie neck blouse, j.crew blythe

tibi time of year

there are so many great sales going on right now it’s hard to keep track. however one of my favorite brands, tibi, is having an especially epic one— up to 70% off plus an extra 15% with code sale15. it’s the perfect excuse to stock up on some investment pieces for fall– i couldn’t resist this gorgeous reversible wool coat in cheery red nor a very of-the-moment balloon sleeved blouse. you can check out my highlights below or shop the entire sale here. shop on cp’s!

1– sleeveless dress: effortless and easy, you could wear this to multiple weddings and parties with different accessories and no one would be the wiser.

2– snap detail pants: the ultimate workhorse, this pair is perfect for work but cropped to show off sneaks on the weekend.

3– statement tunic (love this plaid version too): truly loveee the idea of this very Tory-esque tunic over a bathing suit as a cover up now, and layered under a sweater or leather jacket in cooler temps

4– crocodile slides: i don’t think the slide trend is slowing down anytime soon, so you can wear these babies now and again next summer– because who doesn’t love a double buckle?

5– silk blazer: i’ve been dying for a ‘wear with everything’ white blazer (read about my new blazer obsession here). the oversized buttons and slit sleeves add an ‘it girl’ factor to this one.

what i wish i was wearing wednesday

on monday night I got the chance to attend the opening of sotheby’s newest prints show, which was done in partial collaboration with DVF’s creative director Jonathan Saunders. for those of you who don’t him, you can read about my obsession with his new collection for the brand here. it was a cool event that featured looks from the newest DVF summer collection to browse and pre-order in addition to the art for auction. much of his fireside chat was dedicated to talking about his unusual color pairings and it got me itching to add some brighter hues into my work week mix.

this sandro set is slightly retro and the perfect spring alternative to a dress. pair with a long boyfriend blazer over the shoulders and some chunky gems to avoid looking a little too preppy. also, as with any event filled with the “fashion crowd”, i got to see the latest fads in action– including the shoe du jour, the low slide. not the sexiest of looks, but i’m tempted to try nonetheless. luckily i found this pair of nude slides at payless, which are doppelgangers for these much more expensive Philip Lims. definitely worth trying at just $29!

1- sandro knit top

2- sandro skirt

3- julie vos chunky bracelet

4- christian siriano slides

5- theory boyfriend blazer

happy humpday CPs! what would you like to be wearing today??
