neutrals with a kick

Happy monday chic peas! I saw this image over the weekend on the most unlikely website for sartorial inspiration- victorias secret. I typically think of their clothes as more trend-following than trend-setting, but this outfit is perfectly now as well as in tune with many Spring 2014 looks. With holiday party season in full swing (more posts on that to come) I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by sequins, lace and sparkle at the moment. The outfit above is refreshingly casual, covered, and neutral.

Of course the shoes make the outfit interesting and unexpected. The colored shoe trend has been big for a while, but still showed up on the burberry, kate spade and reed krakoff spring runways this september.

The mix of neutrals is essential to tone everything down- to avoid looking overstyled. And the best part? you probably already own most of the items in your closet. Here are some more photos that might inspire you to take the ‘neutrals with a kick’ plunge.

How much do you adore the shoes above? I personally don’t know how much wear I would get out a neon blue pair, so I am thinking a red or plum pair might be up my alley. This alice and olivia pair would be perfect (also comes in purple for you adventure seekers!) or the kate spade licorice.

These maroonish Pour La Victoire’s are the most likely to make it home with me. I’ll complete the look with my favorite pair of gray jeans (by madewell) and a Vince striped t. If you want the exact shirt worn in the first picture, it’s on clearance here. Perfect look for a casual Friday evening after the holiday!

going wide

Pardonne-moi for my absence- the last few weeks have been a blur and I know with the holiday season coming up, things are bound to get busier. Of course, I leave for five minutes and suddenly what’s old is new again- flared jeans are back, and in a big way. I’m sure thousands of blog posts out there are covering the same topic, but after seeing such great inspiration lately, I couldn’t resist. (Check out a real girl style maven, Sally Bernadette, from a piece of toast, looking great in hers.)

For the last few years, the skinny ankle, then the jegging, and finally the boyfriend cut craze, have stolen the denim spotlight. I personally, love a good straight leg pair (and love a legging/jegging even more.) Due to my petite height it’s much easier to find a pair that works on me and you don’t have to worry about hemming them to the right length for a certain pair of shoes. However, recently, pictures of wide legged pairs seem to be popping up everywhere and are making me want to dust off a pair of old bell bottoms from the back of my closet.

Rachel Zoe, godmother of fashion and my I-D-O-L, seems to have figured out the flared look for a short girl, so I hope to channel her and don a pair soon. If you find the right ones, they can be more elongating (code word for slimming) and chic than narrower cuts. As with any other oversized item, proportion is key. I think you have to go for a pair that is tight in the thighs as opposed to wide throughout, to avoid looking frumpy.

After a little perusing, I’m going to re-test the waters with either this bell bottom J. Brand pair or a darker wash by Paige. I plan to wear mine with a knit top, oversized scarf and these simple heeled boots, a la picture numero uno. However, I do love the idea of a trouser-esque pair and a skimpy silk tank for night.

the latest trend hitting the streets (and the blogs) is the cocoon coat. basically it’s a modified version of a giant overcoat- with fleecy fabrics, and a round sort of swaddled shape. celebs such as Gwinnie (looking lovely at the airport in alice + olivia), miranda kerr (with flynn in isabel marant), and my favorite chic pea miroslava duma (cocoon coat + over the knee boots = yum) have all been photographed in them recently. it’s kind of a 60s shape but the best ones have clean, modern lines and are worn with interesting touches to avoid a retro feeling.

while the 65 degree Charlotte weather hasn’t exactly driven me to purchase any winter coats this season, let alone a $600 one, here are my favorite picks.

1- the alice + olivia for goop one worn by Gwyneth Paltrow. Color blocked detail makes your outfit interesting even if you’re wearing jeans and sneakers.

2- this graphic black and white parker could easily be dressed up or down. i think it would be the perfect winter coat to top a LBD or over bundled over work clothes on a chilly day.

3-a runway worthy, rachel zoe-esque shearling number from rebecca taylor. no words for this lovliness.

4- a classic vince – one of my friends owns this coat and the amount it is borrowed out is proof positive of its chic pea, easy to wear -ness . other great options include a nubby cream one here, a classic j.crew wool one, and a wear-with-everything gray marc jacobs,

green eyed monster

you know when you almost buy something in a store and decide against it, then later you see someone else wearing said item, looking amazing? ive decided this is the worst kind of fashion karma out there- and it always seems to happen when im trying to be frugal (hah) and not buy things i dont need. its like twice the pain- you didn’t get the item for yourself AND you’re forced to watch someone else look great in/with it. and it makes me one jealous chic pea.

this happened last night while getting our nightly dose of E! I tried on this amazing sweater dress from bcbg a few weeks ago (the fit is amazing, btw, and the material is the perfect thickness.) and there was Guiliana, in the dress of my dreams (i mean, in reality, i had forgotten about it since i tried it on.) anyways- seeing her look divine made me want to get up and run, not walk, back to the southpark mall pronto.

wear it uptown with kate-middleton-made-famous LK Bennett pumps, this classic Cartier watch and a simple navy blazer.

wear it downtown with these boots, these killer marni earrings (option 2 would be these) and this awesome leather vest (although i DIE for the rebecca taylor tweed moto vest too)
