hot spot

An afternoon of football and beer has finally made me ready for fall weather. I’m usually a fan of bundling up in layers, but this fall more than others I have avoided pulling out my cold weather wardrobe. One thing I can get excited to wear is this new black and white spotted sweater.  It made its way into my closet last weekend and while out on its first test drive, received the ultimate stamp of approval- no one could believe it was by Forever 21. The thick quilted texture, abstract print, and high-low hem make it look more luxe than its $20 price tag- and comparable to this Preen number, a Stella McCartney, and a classic leopard one by Equipment. I’m pairing mine with an embroidered skirt from Kenzo and a pair of Stuart Weitzman 50-50s that have been everywhere this fall.

forward march

I have discovered a new website to fuel my borderline compulsive online shopping addiction- Forward by Elyse Walker. For those already familiar with the site, please ignore my ignorance/possibly the rest of this post. But really- I feel like I’ve discovered the holy grail of online boutiques- which is a major problem, since everything is tres, tres cher. It’s so well edited, (side note- a college friend taught me this fancy pants term to use when a store has great selection but not an overwhelming amount to choose from, I still think of her every time I say it) and the styling is even better- they pair things exactly how I want to wear them and make me want to buy the whole look in a few clicks. I feel like this is where all of my favorite NYC chic peas shop. Most importantly, I need all of it in my wardrobe- prontisimo. Here are few of my favorite things.

To start things off, how about this seemingly basic Acne tunic dress. Its funky cut and the sheer detail on the back makes it stand alone with booties or I could see it belted with a pair of leather coated jeans for a dressier look.

Moving on, how B-A-N-A-N-A-S (to steal a line from the ultimate chic pea, RZ) is this cropped Isabel Marant blazer. So funky, so cool, so easy to wear with everything from a pencil skirt or a pair of cool slouchy trousers to work to topping off a flimsy little slip dress for dinner out. Literally Isabel Marant can do no wrong by me.

This Yigal Azrouel dress would make getting dressed for work (my every morning struggle) insanely easy- the piece work on the bodice and ruffled hem are very now, even though this dress is last season, hence the major sale price. Now if only they still had it available in my size…

And finally, to round off my shopping list, a classic tote updated in buttery suede for fall. Seriously, this website is going to be the death of my bank account. It’s all so good. R.I.P. savings account.

leather shorts

In the last year or so, my favorite thing to wear out at night has become shorts. They can be just as dressy as a skirt or dress, but are twice as comfortable and more low key. With the emphasis on leather everything this fall, I’ve been looking for the perfect pair of leather shorts to incorporate into my mix of regulars. I’ve found a few basic pairs on asos (here and here), and shopbop has about 67 pairs I want (example numero uno), including a fun mint colored pair by J Brand. I also recently discovered these mega sale Thakoon ones on Edition01 and debate pulling the trigger on them daily.

After much debate (and even more online style stalking) over what to wear with them, I’ve decided they are surprisingly versatile. I’ve seen them styled with stripes, sweaters and denim for day (truth be told- what really sold me on a pair was seeing them on my favorite chic pea- Olivia Palermo- bottom photo ) But by night, they can be transformed for cocktail hour with a silky top or a blazer and heels.

For a casual day, I’d wear the rag and bone pair with an oversized sweater and boots. (other sweater ideas here and here– such a fun fuzzy texture to contrast the slick leather) Top off the look with an architectural TB cuff and this funky tassel necklace.

The more ladylike version of this daytime ensemble, channeling Kourtney K, would go something like this- tailored shorts by Tibi, Tucker polka dot blouse (similar one here), opaque tights, and these sick Tory Burch jeweled booties. Seriously, I NEED THEM. Unfortunately, I doubt I would wear them more than…twice. Screen shot 2013-09-19 at 10.14.00 PM

Last but not least, for a fun night out or dressy event, try a pair with a dressy top, clutch and heels. My favorite blouses are this amazing embellished Anna Sui, a sequined reversible top from Anthropologie, and another drape-y number by Haute Hippie (currently on sale.) The heels are Aquazzura but for a similar look try these. Finish off the look with a crocodile clutch to hold all of your essentials.

lace case

I have wanted to take the plunge on a strappy pair of lace-up heels for a while. Literally my determination to find the perfect pair, especially since I know I’ll be spending a significant amount on them, may be verging on making me a slight head case. While I usually avoid spending large amounts on trendy items, numerous incarnations have shown up on runways in the last few years, and I am starting to think of them as more of a staple item. They look great with a flouncy skirt or dress, and equally chic contrasting masculine items like boyfriend jeans or a leather jacket.

I tried to dip my toe (literally and figuratively, I guess) by purchasing the Prabal Gurung for Target version back in April 2013, per the recommendation of a favorite chic pea, Marlien Rentmeester on Tory Burch’s blog

I have to sheepishly admit, I haven’t had the guts to wear them out. As great as they look in photos, in person…they look cheap. And if I’m completely honest, they remind me of something that would be sold at Frederick’s of Hollywood or another equally seedy store. However, I remain determined to incorporate the look into my wardrobe. I’ve debated the ever-stylish Aquazurras that are sold here, and are featured in about every fashion-y photo on pinterest, and have had similar thoughts about the Valentino Rockstud

But now, with their celebrity status waning, I’m not sure I still want to pull the trigger. Luckily, the J.Crew spring 2014 presentation sent me some divine chic pea inspiration. Meet my latest obsession, and I’m convinced, new sole mate (more shoe puns, sorry, I have to stop)…Sophia Webster. I mean- how cool do these girls look?

After the J.Crew inspa I discovered these babies on her website and fell in L-O-V-E.

They’re the perfect mix of ladylike and tough, reminiscent of a Mary Jane or maybe a pair of Victorian lace up boots, but with enough sex appeal to be edgy and stay interesting. Bloggers out there- give me your thoughts- which pair should I spring for?
